'Smart drugs' for students?
John Harris, a professor of bioethics believes that the government should “seriously consider” making cognition-enhancing drugs available over the counter for students. Professor Harris, also the director of the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation at the University of Manchester, believes that drugs such as Ritalin, Provigil and Adderall could significantly improve the concentration and performance of students. Despite side effects such as nausea, insomnia, depression and even hair loss, he believes that the benefits of the drugs outweigh the risks stated. read more

Pulpit to pub: ‘I think this is a society that needs help’
The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a talk in Edwards Bar in Cardiff on Saturday 13th December, based upon the question: ‘Can God mend a broken Britain?’ The discussion was organised by the group Solace, founded in 2007 by Wendy Sanderson of the Church Army, and Baptist minister James Karran. Their aim is to make the church more accessible to younger people, hence the location for this discussion. read more

Released al-Qaida suspect talks of his ordeal
On Tuesday evening (December the 9th) there was a talk in Eliot lecture theatre 2 by Hicham Yezza. On May the 14th, earlier this year, the 30-year-old Algerian was detained by police for possessing a copy of the al-Qaida training manual that he had been given to print by a friend researching the terrorist group's techniques for his MA. The training manual is widely available and can even be bought on amazon. read more

Local Olympian to name fastest trains in Kent
From December 2009 on 395 Hitachi class trains will be operating on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) having a top speed of 140mph. As the fastest domestic trains in Britain, current journey times into London from Kent will be slashed by as much as half. For many students who have to pass through London to get home the new train is going to be a great timesaving factor. read more

Kent's STIs on the rise
The figure of chlamydia patients has risen dramatically in the last ten years in Kent. In Medway alone, the figure has increased by 122 per cent from 224 cases in 2005-06 to 497 in 2007-08. Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust published a statistic showing that the figure for genital warts has risen by 54 per cent from 681 cases to 1,051 within the last year. read more
