British Film Industry Announces its Five Year Plan
The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced its plans to put £285 million of National Lottery funding into the British cinema industry over the next five years. The scheme, called New Horizons for UK Film, aims to build on the recently increased success of British films, which has seen the average share of domestic product in cinemas rise from around 6% to 13% last year. read more

Tibet protester dies after setting himself on fire
A Tibetan monk who set himself alight in New Delhi on Monday has died from his injuries. Jamphel Yeshi had sustained burns to 90% of his body, and had been in a critical condition for two days following the incident before his death on Wednesday. Yeshi, a Tibetan exile, set himself on fire in protest at Chinese president Hu Jintao’s visit to India on Thursday outside New Delhi’s parliament building. read more

Luther Star to Play Nelson Mandela
The British actor Idris Elba has been chosen to play the role of the Nelson Mandela in a film about the former South African President’s life. Elba, 39, will take the lead in the adaptation Long Walk to Freedom, named after Mandela’s 1995 autobiography of the same name. The film comes 22 years after Mandela was freed from prison. It will be produced by South African producer Anant Singh who acquired the rights 15 years ago. read more

Israeli Apartheid Week
Israeli Apartheid Week started back in 2005 with just one event taking place in Toronto. Since then it has grown into an international event, with over 55 countries hosting events in 2010. The goal is simple, to raise awareness about the need to boycott Israel as it is committing human rights abuses and opposing a system of Apartheid on the Arab population of Israel. read more
