The Best Football Banners of All Time
In light of recent football supporters’ banners making the headlines, George Dagless takes a look at some of the best ones ever to be seen on the terraces.
1. The Martin Skrtel Appreciation society
Famed for his less than friendly appearance and tough tackling, this banner just about sums up how hard the Slovakian is.
2. Everton’s cheeky dig at Liverpool
As Liverpool teetered on the brink of administration under Tom Hicks’ and George Gillett’s ownership, Everton fans took the opportunity to thank the Americans.
3. Chelsea’s Rafael Benitez Fan club
When Rafael Benitez was appointed as interim manager of Chelsea, it was less than popular appointment, as this wordplay suggests.
4. Dockers’ delight
West Ham were relegated under Avram Grant much to the delight of Millwall fans. This banner, attached to a plane, shows how the Israeli secured a place in the hearts of Millwall fans.
5. Cold as Ice…land
Chelsea icon Eidur Gudjohnsen had his status affirmed by this banner at Stamford Bridge.
6. That Mastercard one
This banner epitomises the sense of humour of English football fans: turning up too late to see their team at the World Cup but still making light of it all.
7. Together standing tall
Despite their country being in financial trouble in 2012, Irish fans weren’t going to miss the opportunity of seeing their team play in their first international tournament for a decade.
