A look at: Breakin’ Convention at The Gulbenkian
Coming to The Gulbenkian on 28 and 29 May, Breakin’ Convention is a hip hop dance festival, which has been internationally acclaimed by theatre critics.
Now in its thirteenth year, this Sadler’s Wells Production has been curated once again by associate artist Jonzi D, a dancer, spoken word artist, and director. Jonzi D is a big advocate of hip hop and has enlivened the hip hop and theatre scene through his work in recent years.
The performance has been called “one of the world’s greatest celebrations of hip hop culture”. It involves three international acts, including Antoinette Gomis, who presents Images, an atmospheric solo inspired by the music of Nina Simone and Civil Rights.
Another of the acts, Iron Skulls, originate from Spain, and present the surreal Sinestesia. Sinestesia involves dancers morphing into post-apocalyptic survivors.
The final international act involved in Breakin’ Convention is the Dutch group The Ruggeds, who will perform the high octane Adrenaline.
Well worth heading along to for any fans of hip hop or dance, this performance is sure to be a big hit when it comes to the Gulbenkian at the end of May.
