Entertainment Round-Up: Things to do in Canterbury This Week
Welcome back! Here’s your round-up of entertainment happenings for the first week of term (Monday 19 – Sunday 25 January).
On Monday, the Gulbenkian is showing the Oscar-nominated film Kon-Tiki, based on a true story of a Norwegian anthropologist’s voyage across the Pacific Ocean. The film is in Norwegian with English subtitles and promises to be a visual masterpiece.
Get yourself down to The Cuban on Tuesday night for Canterbury’s biggest and best RnB and hip-hop night, Swerve Tuesdays.
Venue re-opens its doors on Wednesday night for the Vensday Launch Party. Grab your flatmates and get in the pre-drinks for the biggest club night of the week.
Thursday evening offers the chance to rejuvenate after a couple of heavy nights, with a selection of comedy showcases to choose from. The Parrot hosts Chatback Comedy Club, boasting big names from the comedy circuit. If you fancy something a little more homegrown, the weekly stand-up showcase Monkeyshine is back in Mungos every Thursday this term – and they’re calling for all budding comedians to get involved!
It’s time to return to Venue this weekend, and with two huge events on both Friday and Saturday night, why bother going home? On Friday, join the hipsters flocking to the biggest house music night Canterbury has to offer at Trend‘s relaunch party. Saturday plays host to this year’s Refresher’s Festival, offering drink deals and freebies from the likes of Domino’s pizza and Odeon.
On Sunday, catch one of the year’s most talked about films at the Gulbenkian, The Theory of Everything – an inspiring biopic of Stephen Hawking’s work, life and first love. The film is showing at 16:30 and 19:15, offering a perfect way to dust off your first week back. You never know, it might even motivate you to work hard this term.
