Alex Miller reviews Zeus Ouzeri & Taverna, the new Greek restaurant in the heart of Canterbury.

Stepping into Zeus Ouzeri & Taverna is like instantly removing yourself from a cold wintery Canterbury and placing yourself back into the seaside Greek taverna you once visited over summer. The music, the smells and the typically Greek style décor will certainly take you back.

Zeus Ouzeri & Taverna, located on Orange Street near the Marlowe Theatre, serves the best picks of Greek cuisine along with drinks form the Mediterranean. From your classic dips to imported beers like FIX and Mythos you’ll feel like you’re in Athens. The food is exquisite and all prepared using traditional Greek methods.

Greek food is highly underestimated and is often overshadowed by Italian or French cuisine but Zeus exceeds expectations by offering top quality food in a comfortable and relaxed environment. The menu is short and sweet offering classics such as humus and calamari for starters along with other not so familiar dishes such as loukaniko or souvlaki for a main. Meanwhile Greek music plays in the background and you can sit and enjoy the modern murals of Greek gods on the walls.

I took my mum along, who used to live in Greece, and it got her seal of approval so that certainly has to count for something! It’s definitely a great place to expand your horizons and try something new and delicious this winter time. I personally recommend the keftedes which are Greek style meatballs and the Pougi which is pasta stuffed with mince.

What’s more, on Tuesdays it’s two for one on souvlaki for students and who doesn’t love delicious buy one get one free grilled chicken on a stick?

The only drawback is the limited dessert menu, if you’re after a chocolate pudding this isn’t the place for you. Sticking to the theme of traditional Greek food, yogurt with a vast array of toppings like honey or chocolate is a great way to end the meal.

All in all it’s a great place to forget about the bank balance and give yourself a well-deserved treat.

The only thing really missing is that nice warm Greek weather you feel when you step out the door and back out into the cold!
