A protester was apprehended by police today outside Canterbury Cathedral after attempting to make contact with the car reportedly carrying the Prince of Wales.
The event happened at around 2:20pm this afternoon outside the gates of the Kings School, whose grounds connect with the Cathedral in which the new Archbishop of Canterbury’s Enthronement ceremony was taking place. As the escort carrying the Prince advanced, the middle-aged man – who was part of a small group of anti-government protesters – made a sudden movement towards the front of the car coming towards him. He was immediately apprehended by police and non-uniform officers. He was restrained on the ground at the scene until the escort was behind the gates. Shortly after the incident, the suspect was arrested and taken away in a police van amid criticism from protesters.
Also in attendance of the event was the Prime Minister David Cameron, however another police escort was seen entering the grounds from another entrance 30 minutes before the incident and no similar incident was reported. Due to the blacked-out windows, it is unconfirmed whether the Prime Minister was inside the car.
