Canterbury’s new underground bar to open this January

Canterbury’s getting a new, 1920’s themed underground bar later this month.

Aptly called ‘Privy’, the bar will make use of a disused block of toilets located on the corner of Burgate and Lower Bridge Street – renovating it into a space which brings “glamour, elegance, decadence and a touch of class” to the student city’s nightlife.

Opened in the 1930’s, the toilets were utilised for 70 years before lack of use and funding cuts led to their closure. Angela Long, owner of Canterbury’s Loft, purchased the site in 2015 with the intent of creating another speakeasy, adding to Canterbury’s classy bar-scene.

With The Pound, Bramley’s, and Ballroom within walking distance, Privy’s decor and service will need to deliver in order to win over students and residents alike.
