Study calls for new housing laws following Grenfell

A major new report between the University of Kent and the University of Bristol have called for a new law to be introduced in the wake of the Grenfell tower fire. The joint research venture between the two universities looked into the issues that contributed to the Grenfell Tower fire on the 14th of June 2017. The report concluded that laws surrounding tenant protection in the UK are “outdated, complex and patchily enforced”. Phil Shiner Stripped of Honorary Doctorate

The University of Kent have stripped a human rights lawyer of an honorary doctorate, after being struck off for bringing abuse claims against UK troops in Iraq. Twelve charges of misconduct were brought against Phil Shiner by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal back in February. The 60 year old was struck off for receiving more than £1.6million in taxpayers money; and for wrongly accusing hundreds of British soldiers in Iraq of murder, torture, and mistreatment; and for bringing false allegations to court. University opens dedicated recycling hub

On the 6th of November, the University of Kent officially opened its new recycling hub. The project has been in the works for three years, with the current site being finalised only 18 months ago. Although the hub was officially opened at the beginning of November, Emma Dimond, the Facilities Management coordinator of Recycling and Waste at the University, says it has “been up and running for a few months”. CSRfm has won three awards at the Student Radio Awards 2017, a national award ceremony hosted on 9 November at the indigO2 for members of the Student Radio Association (SRA). The station won gold for ‘Best Student Radio Chart Show’, a project that saw the CSR team takeover the Student Radio Chart show, which is broadcast on many student and community stations across the country, as well as silver for ‘Best Specialist Programming’, for their Thursday night rock and metal show, ‘Rock on CSR’. People and Planet released damning figures this week, suggesting the University of Kent has more work to do in reducing their environmental impact and increasing the sustainably of their resources.
