Varsity 2010: Women’s Football Update

Christ Church 4 University of Kent 4 (Christ Church won 4-3 on penalties)

Kent beat Christ Church at this year’s Varsity 17-15. The following is a report on the Women’s football match. Despite their strong performance, Kent lost the game on penalities.

Kent went two goals behind within 15 minutes but pulled together and got a goal back through Sharon Odofin mid way through the half. The first half remained fairly even with neither goalkeeper really tested too much and most of the action taking place in the middle of the field.

The second half started with a strong Christ Church and saw the Varsity opponents come out stronger and increase their lead to 3-1.

However, Kent’s fighting spirit came through and an Alex Bitaine goal plus a classic free kick converted by captain Georgie Tricker brought the score back to 3-3 with not long left on the clock.

In a frenzied final 10 minutes Kent really took control and Emma Sharpe looked to be the hero as she netted to put the University ahead. However, in the dying minutes of the game Kent tried desparately to clear the ball from their penalty area and in doing so it fell to the feet of a Christ Church striker, who made no mistake in burying the ball for a last gasp equaliser.

The game went straight to penalties and Christ Church were the winners of this lottery, leaving Kent gutted but still proud after a wonderful game of football.

Luckily, other sports teams made up for the disappointment of the Women’s side and the Varsity Cup stayed with last year’s champions, UKC!
