Student Festivals

There are more and more festivals popping up to cater to every taste and this provides the opportunity to cater to niche markets which has seen a growth in the popularity of Student Festivals. Beach Break began in Kent but now takes place in Pembrey Park, Wales. Summer Break in Cornwall also names itself as the place to be for students.

There are festivals of different sizes like Guilfest, V Festival and Reading Festival which notoriously have attracted many a student reveller over the years.

There’s an obvious demand for live music as University of Kent will see Artsfest and Keynestock. While UoK has their Summer Ball and Christ Church will see their Summer Ball there will be enjoyment for all University students across Canterbury this summer and it is already greatly anticipated for 2011.

The line up for Univeristy of Kent’s Summer Ball 2011 has been announced with McFly and Tinchy Stryder. There shall be a DJ set from Chase and Status and the always wonderful Edith Bowman as well as That Drummer That DJ and UoK’s Yeah! DJ Lefty with VDJ Kel Sweeney. There will also be the obligatory fun fair and more to be announced.

Last year’s Kent Summer Balls saw Florence and the Machine headline in 2010 supported by Feeder, who also headlined Christ Church’s Summer Ball 2010. While the University of Kent saw Dizzee Rascal

headline in 2009.

Beach Break Live prides itself on being the UK’s Student Festival. With Vampire Weekend, Calvin Harris, Chase and Status, University of Kent former student Ellie Goulding, Plan B, The Futureheads, Beardyman, Example, Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip and New Young Pony Club gracing their Main Stage in 2010.

While the event will see DJ sets from Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe. This shows that they know their audience and the event will appeal to a range of contemporary tastes.

Whereas Summer Break is a 96 hour party for students over two weeks to celebrate the end of exams and the beginning of the summer on a private beach in Newquay. This year the festival will take place from the 5th – 9th of June for the first week and the 12th – 16th of June for the second week.

Summer Break’s line up this year has been “guaranteed to melt your brain” with acts like Chase and status, Example, Annie Mac, Subfocus, Nero, Shy FX, Kissy Sell Out, Krafty Kuts and Freestylers.

While Guilfest shall take place on the 15th, 16th and 17th of July in Guilford, Surrey. Known for their mixture of old and new music of a variety of genres, as 2010’s Main Stage, line up saw The Human League follow N-Dubz, to take their headline spot.

So far James Blunt has been announced as Saturday’s Main Stage headliner and Razorlight as Sunday’s. From previous years, the line up only promises to become more eclectic.

V Festival 2011 will take place in Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire on the 20th and 21st of August. Although the event is Sold Out thus far the line up looks promising for ticket holders.
