The Marlowe Theatre Grand Opening
The Marlowe Theatre’s slick and modern architecture seems to symbolize the beginning of an exciting time for Canterbury in terms of the arts.
With the budgets of local theatres being cut up and down the country, the Marlowe Theatre’s recreation from an outdated building into an and up-and-coming spot for culture, is a breath of fresh air.
Twenty five million was pumped into the project to create a space that promotes not only local talents but also stages well known acts like comedian Stephen Merchant, who hit the main theatre on Saturday night.
The incredibly designed main theatre has a capacity of 1,200 while the studios can seat about 250 or 300 standing- which again demonstrates the theatre’s ability to house a range of events for any setting.
You’d be amazed at what you can go and experience at student prices. The newly created “Discovery Card” gives you worthwhile discounts you can’t turn down; and with the theatre being right on the high street there’s no excuse to not pop in and explore what there is to offer.
With bookings filling up to May next year, it’s already apparent that the Marlowe theatre popularity isn’t just a phase. With an overwhelming support from the locals, it’s now the students’ time to help maintain this excellent hub for all things culture.
The production of Legally Blonde, to the Tracy Emin exhibition, to a local indie band called Broken Hands are gracing the walls of Marlowe, so it’s
safe to say this place caters for all. So what are you waiting for? Go check it out and enjoy!
