Single Review – Vampire Weekend – A Punk

On listening to Vampire Weekend’s super catchy new single, A Punk, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported to a Puerto Rican gay bar, where the pina-coladas taste like gloriously flat lemonade and the year is 1973. Much has been written about the preppy foursome’s Afro Beat influence, however, few writers have picked up on the fine calypso rhythms and the Latin American carnival spirit embedded in Vampire Weekend’s songs.

Now look our your window, oh, it’s still the miserable old English winter, pity that, as Puerto Rico has always sounded much more exciting, tip your sombreros off to these stylish Ivy League boys, because when the music’s this good, it doesn’t matter what you’re influenced by, I’m booking myself a Vampire Weekend, see you all in San Juan!
