Live Election Coverage

Get the all latest results, drama and scandal from the Kent Union Elections, live from the venue, our reporting will be starting from 8.30 p.m, with minute by minute coverage, log on later for more details.

21.11 Good evening everyone, the night has got off to a slow start, nothing has happened so far, apart from inQuire Live reporters not being put on the guest list. Humph.

21.15 CSR, the student radio station, have gone live, you can tune it to them on our website, we’re sharing an office with them tonight, could be some scandal, the fact that they’re on air is a good indicator that it could all kick off soon..

21.17 There’s been no official explanation for the delay, a little bird tells me that they couldn’t fit the candidates egos through the venue door..

21.22 The official inQuire award for best dressed goes to Spaniel Popov, the Presidential candidate is wearing a rather fetching pink polka dotted jacket, plus the typical Kiss-esque face paint. If he doesn’t win tonight, he’s got a career in Hollywood ahead of him

21.23 The first results are going to come in 10 mins time, hold on to your seats/hats/something

21.33 The 2008 Kent Union elections are off, 3600 votes have been cast, that is a record for Kent.

21.34 Peter Gray has won the Environmental and Ethics officer, I’ve never heard of him, but he’s live on CSR soon, so listen and find out..

21.37 Jason Simpkins wins Postgrad officer.

21.38 Nicola Barker has won the womens officer, I think I voted for her, but only because she was pretty! 2693 votes, just shows what an attractive looking photo can do for you…

21.40 Liam Carmichael wins Mens officer, I voted to scrap mens officer at the AGM, its essentially a pointless position, but well done to him anyway.

21.41 Marsha Todd wins! She is now our disabilities officer, and that is it for the first round, exciting stuff, you could the tension with a pick axe, but only if you wanted too..

21.43 In approximately 8 mins the next round of voting will begin, up for grabs is RAG president, NUS delegate, LGBT officer and International officer, come on Jack Bowman for LGBT!

21.48 Apparently I shouldn’t be biased, so come on the other LGBT candidate as well..

21.54 Still no action with the second round, I think there might be some technical problems.

21.55 Oh here we go, get ready for the next round on winners and losers

21.56 Ian is going to win RAG, he’s up against No Suitable Candidate, he’d have to be really bad not to win this

21.57 As expected Ian Simons wins. thats a victory for the economics department, the first of many, hopefully

21.58 NUS delegate has two candidates plus the invisible NSC, Faith Victoria, what a name, wins, easily, by about 600 votes

22.01 Jack smashes the LGBT officer contest, by 1000 votes, well done Jack, what a lovely chap he is!

22.02 Lotty Brouwer is victorious! winning 2164 votes, congratulations to her. Thats this round of voting over, we’ll be back in 10 mins with

the next batch of results, ‘magnanimous in victory’ Jonny Barty on our new International Officer, victory for the Dutch.

22.07 In the fist two rounds of voting there were no serious surprises to who won, but I’m sure that during the course of the night we will get some unexpected results. JCC results coming soon, oh the tension! It’s all getting to me I’m afraid. I haven’t felt so nervous in all the years I’ve been in journalism.

22.15 the third round is coming up now, that would be all the colleges and Parkwood, exciting stuff, come on Lauren for Keynes!

22.16 Ok, so Lauren Granville has won, but that’s not much of a feat considering she was running against no suitable candidate.

22.18 Helen Woods is now in control of Eliot, well done to her, 455 votes, just another word on Lauren who’s currently being interviewed live on CSR, lovely lady, but please stop sending me messages on facebook, I’m starting to think you want something from me.

22.23 Lauren says see wants people to be proud of the union, and more positive change! I like a bit of positive change.

22.25 JCCs presidents for Rutherford, Darwin and the Parkwood SITE president still to come…stay with us and our live coverage…it’s been a rollercoaster of emotion so far….

22.31 Ok so its the third round now, well, its sort of the third round, we’ve got Darwin Rutherford and Parkwood up for election.

22.32 Another loss for No Suitable Candidate, s/he’s having a bad night tonight, no wins, Iain Kiy has assumed control of Darwin, ‘relief’ is his key word.

22.34 Next, the first ballot to go to two rounds, is a victory for Sven Stears, now in charge of Parkwood. Gosh. He won by less than a 100 votes. My housemate once got into a fight with him. Over a certain tory prime minister. No comment from inQuire.

22.39 Another interlude. Next we have Rutherford, Helen Palmer has left a huge political vacuum which needs to be filled.

22.40 Brace yourselves for Rutherford president.

22.42 SHOCK HORROR! 3 ROUNDS! eventually Helen Maskell achieved victory, it was mighty close though, just 44 votes in it, Mark Watts was forced to withdraw from the contest.

22.46 According to Sven apathy has been tackled this year by the internet voting system. Really? I think internet voting is

open to abuse, people I know just voted for the most attractive candidate, including myself!

22.53 Radical change is being proposed by Helen Maskell, what radical change will this be, communism in Rutherford?

22.55 Next up, in five minutes time, is student trustees, and then its the big five. Thats in the Kent Union sense, not the African Safari sense

22.57 CSR are still covering things, tune in, its rather good, although they’ve been telling some nasty lies about my sherbert addiction, I’m not actually snorting sherbert straws, I’m orally digesting them!

23.01 Student Trustee results are coming in the next 30 seconds, hold on to your wigs, its gone to 2 rounds.

23.02 And the winner is………………Democracy…………….no, not really, James wins and Tai wins, Ben Picking lost. Oh dear. He looks rather

teary eyed, he’s a lovely chap, is ben, he’s been telling me jokes all evening, bless him.

23.07 The heat is going to be raised up a notch now that the vice-president positions are in sight. Mum if your viewing this, I love you…

23.10 More results predicted in 4 minutes time…or sooner, I think there’s quite a big delay, oh, and if Zain Sardar’s mum is reading this, then I love you too, but in a slightly different way!

23.16 Hot Chip is currently playing in the background, was anyone else a little disappointed by their third album?

23.17 Not a great deal happening in election land, everyone here is completely wasted. Who are new sabbatical officers going to be? anyone got in predictions? Personally I think Spaniel Popov could surprise a few people.

23.21 Ok, excitement, the war music is back, on, are Kent union planning on invading Vietnam, word is we are involved in the arms trade in someway, anyway back to reality, Education Sabbatical is shortly to be announced.

23.23 PRESIDENT PALMER! Palmtrees has outgrown the Rutherford rainforest, she got over 1800 votes, she’s currently being interviewed on CSR tune in. I’m going to be on air one day, the new terry wogan, but with a better wig, Helen Palmer has just given me a bottle of champagne, the crowd goes wild, she seems to be a very popular lady.

23.28. In the last category I voted for Master Bates, Tom Bates, who is a very decent young man, its a shame he lost really.

23.30 Just 4 more to go, then I can go home and sleep, hooray!

23.32 Right then folks, its the hotly contested Sports Sabbatical contest, there are no fewer than 5 candidates for this.

23.33 There were five rounds of voting. Golly gosh.

23.37 Cai Robbins lead in every single round, she then won finally in the fifth, it was very close though, only about 60 votes in it.

23.39 Welfare is next, its all got rather tense in the office, the question is who can replace Pete Mackintosh, who indeed, the mighty pistol pete, anyone? Surely not.

23.42 CSR, I spent my whole first year deriding them, but they’re doing very well tonight, listen live via the top corner of the page.

23.44 There has been a slight change to the schedule, Activities Sabb is up next, instead of welfare, just think for the first time in two years, James Bull wont be our activities sabb, the end of an era.

23.46 Activities, just three contestants, is about to be declared………

23.48 And the winner is……………well its not Ben Tipple, for shame, he goes out in the second round, Caz Brooker, of the pole ‘fitness’ soc has won, she thinks she is the best candidate, who knows if she is? Congrats to her. Ben had a tear in his eye, that’s how much it meant to him.

23.51 Only VP Welfare and President left. Who knows what is going to happen towards the end of this amazing night! The drama!, the emotions! I’m pleased to see that all the losing candidates have taken there loses honourably, on stage at least.

23.59 Will it be the clown? The big bearded goatee man? The Sat Nav salesman? Who knows.

00.01 RESULTS IN NOW!

00.04 VP Welfare is…oh gosh I can’t bear it….oh the humanity…

00.05 Right, so this has been taken to four rounds. NSC has been eliminated.

00.06 Joshy P now eliminated!

00.07 Project CATER won’t see the light of day.

00.09 Little Tom Page has done it, with 1234 votes! That’s a nice number!

00.10 That was a rip-snorter of a vote! (is this cricket!? -ed) Simon Culpepper was leading till the last round, but little Tom claimed a mighty victory, he’s the comeback kid.

00.15 The big one, President, is all we’ve got left, will Tom Christian win? Find out in the next couple of minutes.

00.18 As Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out ends, the sea of drunken student bodies swells, the anticipation and a sense of importance hangs in the air, President is soon, to be decided, the result will be up here in two minutes, don’t go anywhere!

00.23 President: It lasted only one round!

00.26 The new heavy weight champion of the world is…Tom Tom Christian with an overwhelming 1800 votes. Big Si came second with 1025, and Spaniel last with 394.

0.29 Well, it was all rather predictable, that said, still exciting times, the new regime is ushered in, a new era commences, lets hope its a good one.

0.30 Goodnight Elections, listen to CSR for an interview with Tom Christian, I think he is the Blair of student politics, that is not an insult, he’s just very savvy, I’m going to party now, Zain Sardar is off too, it’s been fun, its been emotional.

0.31 Goodnight to all our readers, the last word is from spaniel, who is demanding a recount. sleep well folks.

  • I don’t care if you think I am unfair – it’s my opinion and I don’t have to apologise for it!

As she is a representative officer I believe the person best placed to represent international students – is an international student.

Yes, she has travelled and speak different languages but haven’t we all! That does not mean I can empathize with students who are paying £10k a year fees or those with visa issues.

Shock horror I have a dissenting point of view – at least some of us do.

  • Tom Christian is a slimy arrogant smug person who got around 1800 votes….obviously this opinion is shared by many!

  • If you mean last year, I thought Katie Wheeler ran for Wellfare, not women’s officer?

Congrats to all the newly elected!

  • Shaun thats a bit unfair… just because she isnt international does not mean she’s not going to do a good job. Good luck to her! And anyway.. surely it was more controversial for Katie Wheeler to run for womens officer a few months ago when she’s actually still a he..

  • “Personally I think Spaniel Popov could surprise a few people.”

I did surprise a few people. With how few votes I got. Ha ha. Ah well. Relive the campaign on Tuesday March 25th with ‘Spaniel Popov: Leviathan’ at 7pm. The story of a madcap clown and his maverick campaign. Tickets are on sale at the Gulbenkian box office now. What a shameless plug. 🙂

  • In response to Mr Turnball’s comments:

“Ben Tipple’s vigorous campaign (everyone changing their facebook pic to his promo badge) failed against Caz Brooker’s (Tom Marsh changing his picture)?

    Hmm.”

I would just like to clarify that, having helped run and organise most of Caz Brookers campaign, I find your analysis of her victory somewhat lacking. I know for a fact that Tom Marsh did help, however, he was only one of a substantial team of people who have been working non-stop for two weeks on this campaign; Caz and co were almost always the first out and about on campus and the last to leave – I do not think you should take issue with the fact that she has a ‘popular’ boyfriend, as it is probably the most immature argument I’ve seen regarding these elections.

I would just also like to add that there was no animosity between any of the activities candidates, who all worked incredibly hard. Do not try and make an issue out of this.

    Yours sincerely,

Jamie Bradbury (Editor of the HORN 😉 )

  • Is Lotty suitable for International Officer considering she isn’t classed as an international student, ASSUMING she is a Dutch/EU citizen?

Of course she has won an overwhelming mandate from voters but can she relate to the issues that confront international students?

    Controversy eh!
