InQuire Exclusive: University of Kent holds 7th National LGBT Health Summit
The annual LGBT Health Summit held by the Metro Centre begun its conference today at the University with a speech from its Keynote speaker, the Shadow Minister for Public Health, Diane Abbott.
Ms Abbott emphasised the need to have a wider range of health services including sexual health, available to the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) community. She said, “Access to Health Care is a test of societies values”.
She also praised the advances made to public health and improvement in the treatment of those from the LGBT in recent years, saying, that none of it would have been possible without the people at the grass roots.
One of the key messages of the conference was the importance of engaging with the local community.
Another speaker was Roger Newman MBE, who spoke about his experiences of life as an LGBT person. He reminisced over the times when as a teacher under Section 28 he could not talk about being gay. He continued that, “Having a health summit in Kent with the Lord Mayor of Canterbury is a sign the times are changing.”
