University of Kent student found dead at Canterbury residence

A university student was found dead at her student digs in Sussex Avenue, Canterbury on June 21st. Gaelle Wauquier, 21, who was French was discovered by a housemate. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Miss Wauquier suffered with a heart condition for which she took medication and had been anxious about her exam results, despite finding out shortly before her death that she had achieved a 2:1 degree in English from the University of Kent.

A close friend, Steve Wheatcroft, who is a post graduate at Canterbury Christ Church University, said everyone who knew her had been shocked and saddened by her sudden death. He added: “She was an avid reader and wanted to do a masters and become a journalist. She was very caring and mature for her age and was certainly not your average undergraduate.”

A post mortem has taken place but further tests have been requested. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

  • Shocking piece of news this, may she rest in peace.

Good work, Andrew. It’s really important that we all get the chance to pay our respects to a fellow student in our university community and once again appreciate the fragility of life and the mortality of our existence. As students, the lifestyle that we live can sometimes make us feel indestructible.
