Chill Opens in Canterbury

City revellers have a new nightspot to try out with the opening of Chill.Following in the footsteps of its predecessors Churchills and Chicago Rock Cafe, the two-floor St George’s Place venue promises to offer an exciting new addition to Canterbury’s nightlife.

The general manager of the Luminar Leisure club is John Tierney. He said: “The whole objective for my team is to deliver an unrivalled level of service that Canterbury clubbers deserve.”

A £1 million budget was set aside for the rebuild, but Mr Tierney, 40, who has worked in clubs around the county since he was 18, admits the final cost will be more in the region of £1.5 million. He said: “Clubbers who used to come here when it was Chicago’s will understand that it was a very old, very tired venue, but with a great reputation.

“I think they’ll agree when they see this revamp that it is money well spent.”

Features include a new ground level dance floor, VIP booths and bars with back-loading fridges, ensuring drinks remain chilled even during busy evenings.A variety of tastes will be catered for across the normal week.Mondays will continue to be student-orientated with Christ Church Students Union teaming up with promoter Student Republic for a rebranded night.

Urban and RnB music fans will be catered for with Vibe on Thursday nights featuring regular special guests, while Fridays and Saturdays will continue to offer a variety of music similar to those before the refurbishment.Capacity has been extended to 620 including staff, as a result of the refurbishment, but it will trade at its previous level of 578.Mr Tierney expects it to be full to the brim for the opening weeks: “The demand’s there, we’ve had lots of phone calls, and our website and the Facebook sites are receiving lots of hits.

He added: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this to get started, it’s been three years in the making and now I’ve got a venue I’m absolutely proud of. The wow factor’s definitely there.”
