Album Review – Kings of Leon – Only by the Night

If you haven’t heard the new number one album Only by the Night from Kings of Leon you have quite frankly been living under a rock for the best part of this year. After headlining the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury this June, then stealing the show from The Verve with a stonking support set on the main stage at V, 2008 is turning out to be the year of Kings of Leon.

As a taster for the new album, the band released the painfully cool Crawl as a free download, and when first single Sex on Fire was released, with its feel-good guitar riffs and catchy chorus, it hit number one in the UK chart and sat there for three weeks, however it seems a shame the single wasn’t out in time for the summer. The highlight of the album has to be Use Somebody, which aches with the sort of melancholy only Caleb’s southern whine can achieve.

Fans will be happy with the well proven bluesy rock ‘n’ roll recipe, and the radio will lap up the catchy riffs, and there’s no doubt that Only by the Night will propel Kings of Leon into the hearts of the masses but many, including myself, will be left wondering when Kings of Leon will try something new. Then again, if it’s not broken don’t fix it.

  • This album hasn’t quite taken me yet, although Sex on Fire is definitely a sweet-ass single. I prefer their last album but it could still grow on me.

  • Sorry for the crappy ad and not a music video, Kings of Leon have requested for it not to be embedded. Bummers.
