Duel, fool

It has been an impressive start to the term for the University of Kent’s Fencing team. Towards the end of November a Novice Team was lead under the supervision of their Rep Chris Jones to represent the University at Warwick for the National Novice Foil Competition. It was a triumphant sight as eight men and women who albeit amateur managed to battle their way against fencers who had been practicing the sport for some two years. The most outstanding performance came from the men as three of them automatically skipped the first knockout stage thanks to their high rankings. Matt Buss, Ian Pinnock and Phil Chambers all managed to mêlée their way to the final sixteen, with a nail biting finish for Ian as in the last twenty seconds the scores were level 8-8 but glory was snatched by the third seed opponent.

The other half of the team were having just as many successes as Hollie Sansom came second in the Plate competition. Not only have the newcomers adapted to the sporting calibre held at Kent but as the end of term loomed near, Kent Fencing Club went out on a high gaining a win against Imperial College London meaning they have won all but one of the matches in the BUSA league. Furthermore, Melissa Overbury came third out of seventy competing fencers in the Women’s Sabre. The New Year has brought excitement and anxiety as for the first time they will be representing Kent against the unpolished Christ Church for the first year at Varsity. If they handle this with as much talent as displayed in the first term it might as well be classed a walk over.
