The University College for the Creative Arts, Canterbury’s very own art college with satalite campuses in Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester has become a full university after being granted the title by the Privy Council. The institution will now be called The University for the Creative Arts.
The university which was born out of a merger between the Surrey Institute for Art and Design, University College and the Kent Institute for Art and Design in 2005. It currently offers around 80 arts related courses across its campuses and there around 6500 students currently studying there.
In its report the QAA stated that it had no reservations in recommending that the institution be awarded university title, and acknowledged the ambition and success of merger. It also affirmed the high calibre of academic staff.
Rector of the university, Professor Elaine Thomas commented, “We are delighted to have been awarded university title. It is a testament to our staff, who have all worked extremely hard to enhance quality and maintain a vibrant research culture.”
