Volunteer Role: Promotions and Events Co-ordinator

You MUST be a paid up member of InQuire to run for this position

Purpose:

To arrange press tickets with the Marlowe Theatre, The Venue and the Gulbenkian, liaise with contacts to obtain interviews, press tickets, free meals for restaurant reviews and organise Freshers Fayre promotion for InQuire, co-ordinate the KIC Awards and help promote and organise the annual student media charity event. You may also have the chance to lay the IQ Page, a regular design page in InQuire used to distinguish the IQ section.

Activities:

In your role, you will:

  • Attend and chair committee meetings when required
  • Attend regular committee meetings as requested
  • Reply to all emails (Approx 1hr per day)
  • Assist and support other committee members within their roles, in particular the section editors and deal with requests for press tickets
  • Promote and support InQuire’s big events (including KIC Awards, charity events, Freshers Fayre, etc)
  • Maintain and build positive relationships with all commercial partners to ensure InQuire is able to maintain its position as a student newspaper offering review opportunities for those members who want to persue this type of writing style
  • Maintain and build relationships with Kent Union and in particular The Venue and the university’s bars to enable InQuire to offer a bi-weekly competition prize in the newspaper and prizes online whenever possible.
  • Come up with inventive ways to promote InQuire Media
  • Design the IQ Page of the newspaper

Support and Training:

To help you in your role, InQuire will provide the following training and support:

  • InQuire committee induction
  • InDesign training
  • Handover and shadowing from the outgoing Newspaper Editor in how to deal with press requests and contacts
  • Support from the Student Media Manager as well as other Committee members

  • An understanding of how to use InDesign, the tool used in most poster and newspaper design.

Skills required:

  • Organisation – you will receive a lot of emails and have to manage several projects at once
  • Adequate experience of InQuire and the journalism/newspaper industry
  • Willingness to learn and adapt as well as teach others
  • Good personal skills as you will need to maintain positive links with many entertainment venues and be able to build up a good working relationship with the section editors

Expected hours and commitment: Approximately 5 – 10 hours a week. Additional time will be added around big events like the charity event and KIC Awards as details are finalised and the schedule is drawn up.
