UoK Triumphs in Inaugural Athletics Varsity Championships

Tuesday 1st May 2012 saw the inaugural Athletics Varsity Championships take place between the University of Kent, Canterbury Christchurch and Invicta East Kent Athletics Club.

Being the first Athletics Varsity, the event was surrounded by suspense and anticipation as Canterbury’s two Universities squared up to see who would be crowned the first Varsity Champions.

The evenings events started well with Kent Uni’s Grace Sheppard and Anna Biller taking 1st and 2nd respectively in the Women’s 100m, while Diego Cantoni added to the early haul of points with a solid 2nd place in the Men’s 100m. Track success continued with podium finishes for Ross Braden in the Men’s 400m and Danny Jackson in the Men’s 800m while Cat St. John ran an impressive 800m to blow away the competition and secure the no.1 spot for the Women’s 800.

Meanwhile Dean Oakes and Lauren Bodie secured 1st place in Men and Women’s shot put while impressive high-jumping from Greg Hockey and Megan Cox saw Kent Uni’s lead extended. Freddie Newton, Fran Plom and Guy Milne made impressive appearances in the throwing events while Kier Clements and Emma Garcia excelled in the Long Jump.

The successes of the evening were cemented by inspiring running from Kent Uni’s Eric MacTaggart who left the opposition standing in his domination of the 1500m – impressive given his 20th place in the Prague Half-Marathon just 4 weeks before. Track and Field Captain Chris Bull followed close behind for an impressive 3rd place.

The evening was brought to a close by a photo-finish Women’s 4x100m in which Grace Sheppard closed down the opposition on the final leg while the Men’s 4x100m saw Kent finish 2nd and 3rd after Invicta EK fluffed their lines on the final transition.

The results spoke for themselves, with the University of Kent taking not only the Varsity trophy but beating Invicta EK AC to claim the Open Event Trophy aswell. The team is looking to build upon the win which has marked an impressive end to the year for Kent Uni Athletics, and which has seen improving results at BUCS events and local Cross Country races.
