Cafe des Amis Evacuates Customers as Christmas Tree is Set Alight

Cafe des Amis, a restaurant situated near Westgate, had to evacuate customers yesterday evening due to a fire. The incident occurred around 6.30pm, and was allegedly caused by a Christmas tree being set alight. Jon Tarrant, who was drinking in the restaurant at the time, said “either the lights on the tree or a candle near a pine Christmas tree set it alight, and it was up in a blaze along with the whole wall. “There wasn’t major damage except the fire smashed the window. Staff rushed over to our table with a very shocked smiley expression, then told us…

Roberto Martinez: The Chosen One

There’s this man with Catalan roots earning plaudits for his football management nous. In his playing days, he was a midfielder who earned some modest success. He speaks better English than some natives. He dresses like he’s the new young thing from Wall Street sporting well tailored suits and some pricey looking jackets/coats and brogues. He has a great take on the way football should be played and never compromises on his beliefs. He’s an optimist who sees the silver lining even when his teams are well beaten. Take a guess who I’m talking about. And no, it’s not…

This Week’s New Music: Slaves, Warpaint, Best Coast, Lorde

This week’s column features a whole bunch of female singers, with the exception of Slaves’ Where’s Your Car Debbie, below, which is a shouty-man-song. Slaves – Where’s Your Car Debbie A garage band from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, these guys are being championed by NME, Radio 1 and (my favourite) BBC Radio Kent’s New Music show. As the title would suggest, the song is about the search for the car belonging to a girl named Debbie….

Callum Tyndall gives his verdict on why comics are making a comeback. Avengers Assemble is the third biggest film of all time. Iron Man 3 made nearly the same amount. And Christopher Nolan and Zack Synder have successfully rebooted two of the biggest heroes of all time with The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man Of Steel. The simple fact is, comics are well and truly back in the limelight. Marvel and DC are…

Ten of the Best Non-Translatable Words

Sam Howlett takes a linguistic trip around some of the world’s more precise languages. Hold onto your hats and prepare to find out what the English language is lacking in. There are a countless number of words in the English language, but there are many things for which there are no words as yet assigned. I have here a list of foreign words for which there is no English equivalent. Although there are many of these words in existence, I have selected 10. Some, I think you’ll agree, are necessary and would be used on a daily basis in…
